In Week 9 PLFA II action, the Central Division race remained tight at the top as the Królewscy and the BEagles both maintained their unbeaten records with shutout victories, while the bottom half of the division saw the Crusaders get their first win ever. In the only game outside the Central, the Pretorians moved to 2-1 with a victory over the still-winless Silvers. Here is a brief recap of each of the four games that took place over the weekend.
Warszawa Królewscy 19, Pabianice Wilki 0 (in Warsaw)
The Królewscy took advantage of a Pabianice team that was depleted by injuries in the weekend's most important matchup, wearing down the visitors in the second half to come away with a hard-fought 19-0 victory. Warszawa remained tied for first in the Central Division with the Warsaw BEagles, who also won over the weekend to keep pace.
After a scoreless first half, Karol Żak threw a pair of 25-yard touchdowns to Mateusz Poneta to break the deadlock, and Michał Poprawski put the exclamation point on the victory with a long touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
The Królewscy, now 3-0, will face the BEagles next, in a game that will likely determine the top seed in the 'Tramway' division. The two undefeated squads will face off on July 20, with the BEagles nominally as the home team. The 2-1 Wilki will look to get back on track against the Warsaw Spartans B team the next day.
Warszawa Crusaders 30, Warsaw Spartans B 6 (in Warsaw)
The Crusaders, playing on the road for the first time this year, finally got themselves an official PLFA victory, doing so in emphatic fashion with a 30-6 victory over the Warsaw Spartans B team. Luis Stephenson threw for two touchdowns and ran for another for the improving Crusaders, who beat a Spartans team that is going through transition due to some coaching changes.
Bartosz Bujak got the Crusaders on the board first with a short touchdown run before Stephenson's 15-yard scoring run made it 12-0 after a quarter of play. The Spartans fought back to 12-6 at halftime but they would not score again, and Stephenson threw a pair of touchdowns to Jan Korkuć to put the game out of reach.
The Crusaders will look to continue their climb in the Central Division standings on July 28, when they travel to Pabianice to face the Wilki, who suffered their first defeat of the season this weekend. The Spartans also have Pabianice set as their next opponent. They will host the Wilki on July 21.
Warsaw BEagles 45, Warsaw Werewolves 0 (in Warsaw)
Sunday was a tough day at the office for the Werewolves, who lost two running backs and a safety to injury in a 45-0 home defeat to the BEagles. The BEagles kept pace with the Warszawa Crusaders as co-leaders in the Central Division a day after their senior team punched their ticket to Trawnik Producent PLFA SuperFinal VIII.
Maciej Wróblewski and Mateusz Dąbrowski each had a pair of touchdowns for the BEagles, who busted out for 25 points in the second quarter after failing to score in the first. The BEagles got two defensive scores to get the scoreboard moving, tallying a safety on a Werewolves punt attempt and a 48-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Paweł Giemza.
The BEagles moved to 3-0 with the victory, ahead of their home clash with the also-undefeated Królewscy on July 20. The Werewolves, on the other hand, are now without a win in four tries in 2013. They will get their next chance at victory against the Lakers in Olsztyn on July 27.
Skoczów Pretorians 46, Olkusz Silvers 12 (in Rudnik)
The Pretorians rebounded from their first loss of the season by blowing open a close game against the Silvers with 32 fourth quarter points en route to a 46-12 victory in Rudnik on Sunday. Jindra Strobl had a hand in five touchdowns for Skoczów, who led only 14-12 heading into the final frame.
That was, in fact, the score after only a quarter, as Strobl ran in twice in the first quarter to erase a pair of leads that Przemysław Prasowski had given the Silvers with a one-yard touchdown run and a subsequent 8-yard touchdown reception. Strobl got his arm going in the fourth, throwing touchdown passes to Przemysław Lanc and Jakub Kantor to ensure the win.
The Silvers dropped to 0-4 on the season in the defeat. Their next game will come against the Rybnik Thunders in Olkusz on July 20. The Silvers will likely need to win that one if they want a victory in 2013, as they finish up with the undefeated Częstochowa Saints in August. The Pretorians will be right back in action next week, looking to strengthen their playoff credentials at home on July 7 against the Globinit Rzeszów Ravens.
