The final game of the three-team round robin to determine the Topliga's playoff seedings brought a big change at the top, as the Wrocław Panthers overhauled the Gdynia Seahawks for the top spot with a 27-12 victory on the coast on Saturday. With the top seed, the Panthers will face the Warsaw Eagles in the Topliga semifinals, while the #2 Seahawks will take on the Primacol Białystok Lowlanders. Both teams finished the season with records of 7-1.
The game was a defensive battle throughout, with each team recording just one touchdown on offense. Wrocław went without quarterback Steven White, who was nursing an injured ankle, but the Panthers still managed to find the end zone first on a 1-yard run by Rickey Stevens. Each team got a field goal later in the first half, and the Seahawks went into the locker room trailing 10-3.
Gdynia got within a point on a Paweł Fabich touchdown reception in the third quarter, and the teams then traded field goals once again to set the tally at 13-12 in favor of Wrocław. The Seahawks had plenty of time to come back, but their fate was sealed by two defensive touchdowns in the final three minutes. It was the first defeat for the Seahawks since June 6 of last year, when Gdynia fell 35-7 to Wrocław. It is worth mentioning, however, that the Seahawks came back a month later to beat the Panthers in SuperFinal X.
