Lions complete Silesia sweep

Autor: Alex Zarganis Published: 2 Jun 2016 | Comments: 0

The Gliwice Lions contained the running game of the AZS Silesia Rebels on Sunday and did enough on offense to come away with a 24-7 home victory that completes a season sweep. The Lions, now 4-1 and a half-game back of the unbeaten Tychy Falcons in the PLFA I South Division, moved one step closer to locking up a playoff spot, while the Rebels fell to 2-3 and are in grave danger of missing out on the postseason party.

A blocked punt in the first quarter gave the Lions a short field to work with, and Adam Nelip cashed in with a 13-yard touchdown reception. Nelip then made PLFA history with a 52-yard field goal, believed to be the longest in league history, in the second quarter. The Rebels threatened to make it a very close game at halftime, but Julius Childs snuffed out the threat with a red zone interception that he took back the length of the field to make it 17-0. That play was reminiscent of the return that Childs had in the season opener between these two teams, a play that won the game for the Lions.
