Gdynia Seahawks 40, Białystok Lowlanders 28 (in Gdynia)
The defending champions got their 2016 season off to a winning start on Saturday, holding off a spirited challenge from the Primacol Białystok Lowlanders to come away with a 40-28 victory in Gdynia. The game was a rematch of one of last year's semifinals, a game won 35-13 by the Seahawks, and it gave Gdynia a 5-0 all-time record against Białystok.
This one more closely resembled Gdynia's 35-32 regular season triumph last season, as the Seahawks never held more than a 12-point lead. Białystok in fact led 7-0 at the end of a quarter, on the strength of a 70-yard touchdown pass from Jabari Harris to Bartosz Głowacki.
The Seahawks turned it around in the second quarter, getting receiving touchdowns by Jakub Mazan and Przemysław Portalski to take a 14-7 lead into halftime. Białystok had an apparent tying touchdown wiped out by an offensive penalty just before the half, while a red-zone interception by Brandon Stanley denied them a chance to regain the lead after Mazan had tied the game.
The Lowlanders tied it early in the third quarter when Harris hit Ronald Long for a 60-yard score, but the Seahawks would again answer with a pair of touchdowns, including a second by Mazan. That score gave quarterback Terrence Owens three touchdowns passes for the day. Harris matched him with an 11-yarder to Tomasz Zubrycki midway through the fourth quarter, before Joshua Quezada wrapped things up for Gdynia with his third touchdown run of the game.
