The first weekend of the PLFA II season saw some familiar names find the winner's circle, along with a few not-so-familiar ones as well. Among the latter, the Wyszków Rhinos pulled off the biggest surprise, rolling up 57 points in their debut. The Rhinos were joined in victory by the Tigers, Patrioci, Lions and Silvers. Here is a quick recap of each of the five games played over the weekend.
Krakow Tigers 14, Skoczów Pretorians 8 (in Skoczów)
After a three-year hiatus, the Krakow Tigers made a successful return to the fields of the PLFA with a 14-8 victory over the Pretorians on Saturday in Skoczów. All 14 Tigers points came in the final quarter, as Daniel Lazarowicz's touchdown run and two-point conversion run tied the game at 8-8 and Grzegorz Gofroń hit Mateusz Jach for a 17-yard touchdown pass with just 50 seconds remaining to steal the win for Krakow.
Wyszków Rhinos 57, Olsztyn Lakers 20 (in Wyszków)
The Rhinos and the Lakers combined for 44 second-quarter points on Saturday in Wyszków, in a game that eventually went to the Rhinos by a 57-20 score. Sebastian Frausto ran for four touchdowns and threw for four more for the debutantes from Wyszków, who overcame a touchdown and two interceptions by Olsztyn's Kamil Zboch. The Rhinos, who got two touchdown receptions apiece from Brian Robinson and Bartosz Szymański, scored the game's first 24 points and led 39-13 at the halftime break.
Poznań Patrioci 21, Słupsk Griffons 6 (in Poznań)
The Patrioci surprised the Griffons by coming out with an air-based attack on Saturday, but it was their defense that really shone in a 21-6 home victory. Słupsk led early on a defensive score, but the Patrioci got first-half touchdowns from Wojciech Szymański and Olgierd Bartoszak to lead 14-6 at the intermission. Joachim Kruger threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Kamil Kwiatkowski to effectively ice the game in the third quarter, and the Poznań defense held the Griffons off the board for the entire contest.
Gliwice Lions 40, Opole Wolverines 6 (in Opole)
In their return to PLFA II after last year's relegation, the Lions dominated the inexperienced Wolverines 40-6 in the opener for both teams on Sunday in Opole. Gliwice got quarterback Marcin Kaźmierczak back from a lengthy injury absence, and the impact was apparent as he threw a pair of touchdown passes to help the Lions build an initial 33-0 advantage. Five different players scored for Gliwice, while Łukasz Szelongiewicz had the only score for the Wolverines.
Olkusz Silvers 24, Beskidy Highlanders 6 (in Osielec)
The Silvers ruined the debut of the Beskidy Highlanders on Sunday in Osielec, recording a 24-6 triumph that ranks as their biggest victory in four years of PLFA play. Olkusz got rushing touchdowns from Kamil Zięba and Marcin Michalczewski as well as a second-quarter safety before a downpour changed the complexion of the game. The Silvers got another safety in the third quarter and a Kamil Bielas touchdown run before Sławomir Wala finally got the Highlanders their first-ever points.
