The Primacol Białystok Lowlanders, led by American offensive stars Jabari Harris and Alexander Allen, continued their impressive start to the Topliga season with a 33-12 victory over the Zagłębie Steelers Interpromex on Saturday in Będzin. Białystok got revenge for a defeat in the only previous meeting between the teams, a 7-0 home loss in April 2011.
The teams traded touchdowns in a first quarter that ended tied at 6. Eryk Mąkowski alertly fell on a fumble in the end zone to give the Lowlanders first blood, but Zagłębie came back to tie the game on a 12-yard score by running back Kevin Marshall. Damian Kołpak's 14-yard touchdown reception then gave Białystok a 13-6 lead going into halftime.
Allen, who ran well all day long, really took over the game in the second half. He put Białystok ahead by two scores with a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and then he effectively locked up the victory with a 90-yard burst early in the fourth.
Konrad Starczewski gave Zagłębie brief hope later in the fourth quarter, scoring on a short touchdown run, but Harris took off on a scramble and scored from midfield for the game's final touchdown. Artur Zalewski, who wore number 15 in honor of the late Ryszard Szaro, the first Pole to play in the NFL, booted the extra point to end the scoring.
The Lowlanders will try to make it three straight against the struggling Warsaw Eagles in the capital on April 19. Białystok played Warsaw in 2009 and again in 2011, giving up 53 points each time. The Steelers will next face the Gdynia Seahawks, hosting the defending champions in Będzin on April 18.
