The Topliga's last remaining undefeated team met its last remaining winless team in Wrocław on Sunday afternoon, and the result was one that probably didn't surprise many league observers. The home Panthers scored 38 points in the first quarter on their way to a 65-6 victory over the Zagłębie Steelers Interpromex.
Marcus Sims scored four touchdowns for the Panthers, all coming in that lopsided first quarter. Sims found the end zone in three different ways, scoring on runs of 50 and 21 yards, an 80-yard kickoff return and a 51-yard pass from Bartosz Dziedzic. Dawid Tarczyński scored the other first-quarter touchdown for Wrocław, hauling in a 33-yard pass from Kyle Israel.
The Steelers points came on a spectacular play midway through the first quarter, when Michał Krzelowski connected on a pass with Paweł Szepiszczak, who then took it 88 yards for a Zagłębie touchdown. That score served to keep a shutout off of Zagłębie's record, but it also somehow led directly to 9 points for the Panthers. Wrocław blocked the extra point attempt and ran it back for a touchdown before Sims did the same thing with the ensuing kickoff.
Grzegorz Mazur, who came into the game tied with his teammate, Tomasz Dziedzic, for the Topliga lead in touchdown receptions, recorded his 8th of the year on a pass from Tomasz's brother, Bartosz. It was the third touchdown pass of the day for Dziedzic, who also added a 10-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
The Panthers will now visit the capital in consecutive weeks, facing the Warsaw Sharks on May 17 and the Warsaw Eagles on May 24. The Steelers, meanwhile, will have one of their most important games of the year in their next matchup, which comes on May 16 against 1-5 Kozły Poznań. The Steelers and Kozły currently occupy the bottom two spots in the Topliga table.
