There were a total of five games played in Groups A and C during Week 7 of PLFA II play, which saw three special Thursday games played on a long holiday weekend. The Angels maintained control at the top of Group A with a win over the Griffons, while the Archers kept pace by beating the Patrioci. Over in Group C, all 6 teams were in action, as the Lakers got their first win and the Crusaders and BEagles bested the Green Ducks and the Sharks, respectively. Here is a quick recap of each of the five games played over the long weekend.
Olsztyn Lakers 32, Warsaw Werewolves 20 (in Warsaw)
The Lakers stormed back from an early 14-point deficit to stun the previously unbeaten Werewolves 32-20 on Saturday in Warsaw. Olsztyn said goodbye to coach Sterling Summerville, who was only set to remain with the team until the end of June by previous arrangement, with their first win of the season. The Lakers will now be under the leadership of Rafał Zapadka.
Olsztyn got a touchdown just before the break and two more in quick succession in the third quarter to take an 18-14 lead. That lead was short-lived, as Jason Abney put the Werewolves back on top on Warsaw's next possession with a 50-yard touchdown run. Paweł Banaszyński then scored his second touchdown to give Olszytn the lead again, and Przemysław Bekier iced the contest in the fourth quarter with his second score.
The Werewolves, now 2-1, dropped a game behind the Warszawa Crusaders in the Group C standings. Their next game will come on July 19 against another one of the Warsaw teams, the BEagles. The 1-2 Lakers will also be back in action on July 19, taking on the undefeated Crusaders in Warsaw.
Warsaw BEagles 42, Warsaw Sharks B 8 (in Warsaw)
The BEagles offense scored three times in the first five minutes to put the Sharks B team on their heels early, and their defense nabbed four interceptions to lead the BEagles to a 42-8 victory on Thursday. The BEagles got scores on offense, defense and special teams in the rout.
Bartłomiej Rot ran the opening kickoff back 83 yards for a touchdown to set the tone for the game, and he scored on an 11-yard pass from Artur Górski less than five minutes later to make it 22-0. Piotr Pamulak made it 28-0 at halftime with a 9-yard touchdown reception, and Paweł Adamczyk ran a pick back 54-yards for a score in the third quarter to extend the lead. The Sharks got their only score on a 64-yard pass from Tomasz Znidericz to Paweł Jasiński in the fourth quarter.
The BEagles now sit in a tie for second place in Group C with their next opponents, the Warsaw Werewolves. The two teams from the capital will meet on July 19, with the BEagles taking part as the nominal home team. The Sharks will also be at home a day later, when they take on the Radom Green Ducks.
Warszawa Crusaders 8, Radom Green Ducks 0 (in Radom)
The Green Ducks and the Crusaders battled to a scoreless draw all the way into the fourth quarter in Radom on Thursday afternoon before the team from the capital finally got the only score of the game to secure their third victory of the season. Radom's potential game-tying drive was thwarted just yards shy of the Warszawa end zone.
A good holiday crowd of 800-strong saw Adrian Grudnia break the deadlock with a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Radom got the ball back and drove steadily down the field with the help of some defensive penalties. The Green Ducks looked to have the score they needed on a second-down pass into the end zone, but the receiver's foot was on the sideline. Kamil Pilich then intercepted the ball on the next play to secure the win for the Werewolves.
At 1-2, the Green Ducks remain in the playoff hunt in Group C play. They will be on the road for their next two contests, starting with a game against the Warsaw Sharks B team on July 20. The Crusaders, meanwhile, will look to continue their unbeaten ways on July 19, when they host the Olsztyn Lakers.
Bydgoszcz Archers 44, Poznań Patrioci 8 (in Poznań)
The Archers and Patrioci matched the Lakers and Werewolves for highest-scoring game of the week on Thursday in Poznań, but, unfortunately for the home team, it was a much more one-sided affair. The Patrioci fell 44-8 in their first home game as an 11-man team, surrendering 30 first-half points in a game whose outcome never seemed in doubt.
Five different players scored for the Archers, but only Arkadiusz Kwinta got on the board more than once. Wojciech Szymański scored on a 46-yard touchdown reception late in the second quarter, but Kwinta erased any comeback hopes with a 15-yard touchdown just before halftime. Jakub Mroczyński added an intereception return for a score in the second half.
The Archers moved to 2-0 with the victory, a half-game behind the Toruń Angels in Group A, while the Patrioci fell to 0-2. Both teams will now have a break until July 13, when they will face each other once again. That return matchup will take place in Bydgoszcz.
Toruń Angels 35, Słupsk Griffons 0 (in Toruń)
The Toruń Angels completed a perfect first half of the regular season on Saturday with a 35-0 home victory over the Słupsk Griffons. The Angels played nearly a perfect game on defense, not allowing the winless Griffons to get a first down until the fourth quarter. It would turn out to be their only one of the game.
Rafał Mierzejewski had touchdown runs in each of the first two quarters, helping Toruń to get the reserves on the field early in the game. The Angels got a defensive score from Wojciech Jędrzejczak and a punt return for a score from Jakub Mazan on their way to a 28-0 halftime lead. Toruń has now outscored Słupsk 103-2 in three matchups between the two clubs.
The Griffons will now have a long break before their next game, at home against the Bydgoszcz Archers on August 3. The Archers beat the Griffons 54-0 in Bydgoszcz earlier in the season. The Angels will be back on the field much sooner, taking on the Seahawks in Sopot on July 12.
