PLFA II Week 3 Roundup

Week 3 of the PLFA II season was a relatively calm one, with only two games played after the Pretorians and Broncos were rained out. In Chorzów, the Rebels beat the Saints in a game that will likely have profound effects on the final Group D standings, while the Silvers finally broke their maiden in Rzeszów. Here is a short recap of both of the games that took place over the weekend.

AZS Silesia Rebels 20, Częstochowa Saints 13 (in Chorzów)

In one of the most anticipated matchups of the 2014 Group D schedule, the Rebels got a pair of touchdown receptions from Paweł Tomaszewski to overcome the Saints 20-13 in Chorzów on Saturday. The Rebels, now 2-0, took over sole control of first place in the division, a half-game ahead of the Majster-Pol Sucha Beskidzka Broncos.

Częstochowa took an early advantage on a short interception return for a touchdown by Mateusz Grabowski, but the Rebels countered with a defensive score of their own to tie the game when Patryk Mołczan picked up a fumble and took it 20 yards to the end zone. Tomaszewski hauled in a Kajetan Grochowski pass later in the first quarter to give Silesia a lead that he would extend to 20-7 in the third quarter with his second touchdown catch. Jacek Wróblewski finally cracked the Rebels defense with a 9-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, but it proved to be too little, too late.

The Saints remain in the thick of the playoff race with a 1-1 record, but they could use a win in their next game, at home against the Rzeszów Ravens on June 7, to stay there. The division-leading Rebels will travel to Sucha Beskidzka to face the Broncos on June 15, in a game that could determine the group's number-one seed.

Olkusz Silvers 26, Rzeszów Ravens 15 (in Rzeszów)

Thirteen proved to be unlucky for the Ravens, as the Silvers were finally able to end their long losing streak on that number by recording a 26-15 victory in Rzeszów on Sunday. The win was the first in PLFA II for Olkusz, who finished each of the last two seasons with an 0-6 record.

Olkusz jumped out to a 12-0 halftime lead on touchdown runs by Marcin Niedziałek and Michał Polak, and they went ahead even further in the third quarter when Polak threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Szymon Sroka. Daniel Krawiec finally got the Ravens on the board with a 40-yard touchdown pass later in the third, but Polak put the game away with a 52-yarder of his own in the finally frame, rendering Mateusz Kuc's late 90-yard interception return irrelevant.

The Silvers will try to push their record over .500 in their next game, a home contest against the Skoczów Pretorians on June 15. The Pretorians, who were rained out this weekend, lost the only game they have played so far this season. The Ravens, now 0-2, will be back in action sooner, visiting the Częstochowa Saints on June 7.

POSTPONED: Skoczów Pretorians vs. Majster-Pol Sucha Beskidzka Broncos (in Skoczów)

A torrential downpour saturated the field where the Skoczów Pretorians and Majster-Pol Sucha Beskidzka Broncos were scheduled to play each other on Sunday afternoon, causing the game to be postponed due to concerns about player safety. No makeup date has been announced.
