PLFA II Week 1 Roundup

The PLFA II season finally kicked off over the past weekend, with three teams all staking claims to early superiority in Group D. The Częstochowa Saints were the only road team to win, traveling to Olkusz to defeat the Silvers, while the Majster-Pol Sucha Beskidzka Broncos and the AZS Silesia Rebels scored comfortable victories over the Rzeszów Ravens and the Skoczów Pretorians, respectively. Here is a quick recap of each of those three South-East openers.

Częstochowa Saints 24, Olkusz Silvers 6 (in Olkusz)

The Częstochowa Saints survived a first-half scare from the Olkusz Silvers to get their third straight season-opening victory, a 24-6 win on Saturday in Olkusz. The Silvers have yet to win an official PLFA game, losing their opener this year after going 0-6 in each of the previous two seasons.

Olkusz definitely looks to have improved over the offseason, however, and they got on the board first through the passing game. Michał Polak hit Szymon Sroka for a 25-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, and only a missed conversion attempt and a fumble in their own end zone left them trailing by a single point at halftime.

The Saints clearly made the better adjustments in the locker room, and they got third-quarter touchdown runs from Jacek Wróblewski and Aleksander Mieruszyński to give them the cushion needed to coast to victory. Damian Belica's 40-yard field goal provided the only points of the final quarter.

Częstochowa will continue on the road for their second game, which comes against the AZS Silesia Rebels on May 17. The Rebels won their first game of the year handily. The Silvers, meanwhile, will try again for that elusive first victory when they travel to Rzeszów to face the Ravens on May 18.

Majster-Pol Sucha Beskidzka Broncos 38, Rzeszów Ravens 7 (in Sucha Beskidzka)

Heavy rain and thunderstorms led to a 30-minute delay in Sucha Beskidzka on Sunday afternoon, but it did nothing to slow down the Broncos offense in a 38-7 rout of the visiting Rzeszów Ravens. Four different Broncos found the end zone in the game, with all five of the Sucha Beskidzka scores coming through the rushing game.

It was actually the Ravens who struck first, getting an 80-yard touchdown from Jakub Chlebica on the very first offensive play of the game. Paweł Pochopień and Filip Bywalec quickly answered with scores for the Broncos, and Grzegorz Błachut and Piotr Panek each galloped 60 yards for scores in the second quarter to make it 30-7 at halftime. Bywalec added another touchdown in the second half.

Both teams will return to action on May 18. On that day, the Broncos will take to the road for the first time in 2014 to face the Skoczów Pretorians, while the Ravens will play their first home game of the year against the Olkusz Silvers. Both the Pretorians and the Silvers lost their season openers this weekend.

AZS Silesia Rebels 40, Skoczów Pretorians 8 (in Gliwice)

Michał Janusz helped the AZS Silesia Rebels make their 2014 debut a winning one, scoring four touchdowns on Sunday evening to lead the Rebels past the visiting Skoczów Pretorians 40-8. Beniamin Bołdys added a touchdown run and a field goal for the victors.

The Pretorians offense hardly saw the field in the first half, thanks to problems recovering kickoffs following the Silesia scores. The Rebels led 21-0 after a quarter and 37-0 at halftime, mainly on the strength of Janusz's running. His 34-yard touchdown to close out the first half was the longest of the game. Tomasz Urban's 25-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave Skoczów their only points.

Both teams will be at home for their next game, against teams that each won their season openers. For the Rebels, it will be a game with possible playoff implications against the Częstochowa Saints on May 17, while the Pretorians will play their home opener against the Majster-Pol Sucha Beskidzka Broncos on May 18.
